Quick Tips

Money Tips
Minor changes in habits can sometimes add up to big savings. You may find that you've become used to buying the biggest and best of anything you purchase. Instead of a brand-new car, you may consider a later model used car, which can equal substantial savings. Switch some of your clothing purchases away from designer labels to see large savings in your clothing budget. Eat out at a more inexpensive restaurant instead of a trendy spot for a meal that is just as delicious, but easier on your wallet.

Car Tip
If the coolant in your car hasn't been changed in several years, you may need to get your cooling system flushed. Rust inhibitors in antifreeze begin to break down over time and need to be renewed. There may also be rust and dirt particles clogging up the cooling system that should be removed.

Organizing Tip
As you begin to get out your cold weather items, be sure to take some time to properly store any spring and summer equipment. Your lawn, garden, and barbecue items should be hosed down and dried completely before storing. Make any needed repairs now so that your equipment will be ready to use when warm weather returns.

Safety Tip
If a severe enough, a winter storm can cause you to be stuck in your home for days at a time. To prepare, be sure to have extra food and water on hand, as well as extra medication and baby items. A flashlight with extra batteries is a must, as are first-aid supplies. You may also want to have a battery-powered radio to enable you to receive weather information in the case of a power outage.

Healthy Living Tip
Colder weather may prompt you to stay indoors rather than getting out for some exercise. But, as long as you are in good health, you should still be able to get out for a moderate walk or run, even if the temperature has fallen. You will actually burn more calories when walking in the cold, as your body has to work harder to keep your temperature up. Depending on the temperature, over the course of an hour, you may burn up to 50 percent more calories by walking on a cold day than you would walking the same amount in summer.
